Brooklynista's Winter Guide:

The winter edition Vol. 1.

There has been so much snow here in NYC that it is kinda impossible to go outside looking cute. With big clunky snow boots, a humongous jacket, hat, scarf, gloves, stockings under your pants, 3 layers of tops, and 2 pairs of socks, you begin to feel like a walking marshmallow. With that being said I am loving the sound of staying in, if I don't have to go out. What I have been doing to keep occupied are these 3 things.. reading, finding new music, watching more movies (every trainers worst nightmare lol). I was never a real movies fanatic but now I'm starting to get into them. Watched some that I have been wanting to see for sometime now just never got to the theatre. Also, I only like certain movies.. which is also why we don't go to the theatre that often. I'm strictly a hilarious comedy or romantic-comedy type o' gal. I know cliche', but when I watch anything out of these genre's I become devastated. That's not a good look.

The movies that fit into these categories were:

"Easy A" - super cute and I began to fall in love with Emma Stone... hard.

"Twilight's Eclipse" - Hated it! I read all the books and everyone said that eclipse was the best movie by far. I understand that from a special effects kinda view but story wise.. Edward creeps me the Fbomb out.. as you can obv. tell I'm Team Jacob!

"Toy Story 3" - Recommended by MANY.. and I LOVED it! Adorable! Big Baby I love you!

"Grown Ups" - It was funny and cute. pretty much what I wanted and was looking for. It satisfied my needs. Wasn't hilarious as I thought though. That was an all-star cast but.. they can still do no wrong in my eyes.

Music heals the soul:

SoulKhan Feat. Sene with remixes Audible Doctor - Shot Glass Magnified - Love every second of it. Beat, vocals, and lyrics. Killer.

Talib Kweli - He just put out a new album it's dope but not dope enough to buy the whole album.. I just got a few tracks.

I Fight Dragons - I was actually put onto them by seeing them in my news feed on Facebook non the less. And I have been listening to this song non-stop. "The Power of Love".

Metric - Gold Guns Girls - to be exact. Love it, need it, you should buy it.

New Young Pony Club - Love it all. Got the whole album and listen to it all the time.

As Of this winter the books I read were:

"You better not cry" by Augusteen Burroughs - Hilarious Christmas Read.

"Tweaked" by Patrick Moore - Another one of my debbie downers dealing with drugs, and abusive situations. Butttt their is always something good that comes out of it. (I wont say anymore!)

Reading now - "Dandelions: Memoirs of a Free Spirit" by Catherine James - A memoir of a groupie pretty much... Love it.

On my to-read list you ask..? Oh yes, there is:

"Blow by Blow The story of Isabella Blow" by Detmar Blow with Tom Sykes

"The Thieves of Manhattan" by Adam Langer

"Just Kids" by Patti Smith

For now that is my winter review from our apt in BK. Hopefully soon the snow will stop falling, so Suri and I can go for a walk with out her jumping through the snow like a bunny. That seriously happened and it was so cute but so sad at the same time.. it was like she was jumping so high yet she was still to small to get anywhere. Then her legs had snow stuck to them like little ice blocks. Once I noticed, I picked her up and ran her home to defrost my Petunia.. so sad :(

However, We were able to make it out last night to meet up with some of our fav. people at a Casmik Event. ALways a good time ;)

If you have any suggestions please feel free to comment ;)

Peace and Suri,

Golden Globes Top 4

I always love when award season comes around. The fashion is unbelievable with the good and the bad. Some people trying way to hard and some who didn't even try and look phenomenal. I also love to watch all the stars get wasted and say profound things in front of their peers. It kinda makes them a little bit more real in my eyes. I know I am a few days late with this but eh.. who gives a hoot. Here are my Top 4 favorites, 2 female 2 male. Might I add that the men really brought it this year. Kudos.

First off we have the glorious Anne Hathaway. Shining and Sparkling in a
Giorgio Armani Privé evening gown. The finale look from the Fall Winter 2010-2011 couture collection is fully embellished with paillettes and Swarovski crystals.

Second best was the stunning newly blonde Emma Stone. Emma sported the gorgeous simple but so f-in elegant look. Wearing a Calvin Klein collection peach dress and Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry.

And here we are with Johnny. The man who can do no wrong in my eyes. God why is he so damn good looking? Johnny's sporting the whole grunge yet I still took a shower look. Sexy. Johnny is wearing a Ralph Lauren Black Label tuxedo, a white Anto shirt with self bib, and Martin Katz studs and cufflinks. He finished off his look with a vintage pocket watch by Gray. And the motorcycle boots make it one complete ball of hottness.

Lastly we have the golden boy himself. Kevin Mchale. As u all know I am a huge Gleek and I cry at almost every episode. Well when I saw Kevin I was first weirded out bc he wasn't in a wheelchair and 2nd bc I though he looked in Julie Bowen's words "Fuckin' Fly". Damn boy, go on wit ya bad self! Kevin's in a Dolce and Gabbana polka dot jacket. FLY.

Who were your top 4?

Lady Gaga - Mugler

In the midst of my daily twitter feed I stumbled upon the Mother Monster. Miss Lady Gaga herself. She has a new remix (which she mixed herself) and a rather creepy short. I am weirdly enough really feeling these creep-tastic videos that some of my favorite artists are putting out. (Hence, Kanye's "Monster" video) This video is quite different though. It all started with the house of Mugler. House of Mugler is newly under the creative direction of Nicola Formichetti, Gaga's costume cohort and personal stylist. As per her "meat dress" debut to the world on the night of the VMA's 2010, we obviously knew that Formchetti was gonna be a crazy one. With her style being extremely out there it only fits right that this short would be too. The short includes clips from Formchetti's first ever menswear runway show. Hat's off to you Nicola, the collection is cohesive, divine and wild all in one.

If I were one to "beat up the beat" I would have murdered it. This track is killable.

As you all know by we have started the "Vintage Shop within a Shop" here at Kaight on Orchard Street. With all the vintage goodies trickling in it is hard not to buy every single item. I have been known as a vintage junkie for quite sometime now. This pop might make me the Queen of Vintage. With Vintage designs from Oscar De La Renta to Etienne Aigner. Now that Valentines Day is on it's way , it's time to become that beautiful Lady in Red. Spice up your wardrobe with some of my favorite vintage finds in red.

These are a must. I am feeling a lil Footloose right here. Also, red cowboy boots and nothing else on Valentines Day night is always a fun time ;)

Happy Birthday Mommy

Jan. 17th marked my Mom's 56th Birthday. Inevitably it was going to be a sad day but throughout the years I have learned what works best for me. Rather than dwelling and feeling sorry I thought of the good times (how cliche, but it's true). I would think about her radiant movie-star looks, her coffee mug that always had a bright red lipstick mark, her laugh, her diamond necklace that never ceased to loose its sparkle, her hair so high and teased yet still as smooth and shiny as a pearl, and most of all her love. I decided the best way to celebrate was to celebrate together. I wore one of her old sweaters that sure enough had peach roses on it. The whole entire day I did not shed one tear of sadness, it was tears of happiness bc I do believe I have finally come to be at peace with the situation. Of course, I miss her uncontrollably and it hurts so bad but that is the game of life. Take it one day at a time. Happy Birthday Mommy! I Love You!

Peace and Love,

Vintage Eairth

Ahhh.. Spring can not come soon enough. Today is a rainy, cold, dreary day here in NYC. As I was searching through twitter I stumbled upon this, @eairth "Fergie of the Black Eye Peas looking hot in Eairth's F/W 2010 Bagobo Spliced dress in Neptune green.." And there she was looking like sunshine. With sunkissed skin, her hair blowing in the summer breeze and a smile that screams "it is a beautiful day and I am loving it!" (I don't know if she was really thinking that but it would be nice to think so..) Anywho, it really made me want to encourage winter to say buh-bye and spring to say "get your cute dresses out, here I come!" So since spring is so near, it is time to get our ass' in gear so we can all look as hot as Fergie. Luckily I have the dress she is wearing and it's on SALE! Click here.

PLUS.. we just launched Kaight's "Vintage Shop within a Shop" with so many "TO DIE FOR" vintage dresses, sweaters, clutches, shoes, jackets.. pretty much everything. Only at the Orchard St. location, so get down here quick bc they are all one of's and I might need them all ;)

I can't believe it has already been a year since Haiti was hit with the devastating earthquake. Throughout the year I would receive emails stating the progress and recovery of the victims. It is truly a wonderful feeling knowing that I was part of the recovery process. I know that there is still tons of work to be done but for now I feel as if we are on the right path. Here is an email I received today from the president of this organization I have been working with in order to restore normalcy to Haiti.

Michele,

Thank you.

On January 12 one year ago, the lives of millions of Haitians changed forever. In the aftermath of the earthquake, tens of thousands of supporters like you sprang into action, allowing Oxfam to implement a swift response that continues today.

But that was just the beginning. From the flooding in Pakistan to the devastating oil spill in the Gulf Coast, we were there.

This year, we expanded our dynamic Saving for Change program and reached nearly 320,000 people in Mali. Our work enabled farmers in East Asia to achieve higher yields with fewer seeds and less water. Oxfam's efforts contributed to victories in the Salvadoran legislature – which passed a new law criminalizing violence against women – and in the Peruvian Congress, which enacted a citizen consultation law supporting indigenous rights. In the US, we achieved a major win after three years of hard work with the passage of oil, gas, and mining transparency legislation.

As the New Year begins I want to congratulate you on your achievements in 2010. You made these accomplishments possible. The progress we make is a testament to the potential of a movement that is fueled by your commitment. Imagine what we can achieve together in 2011.

Sincerely,

Raymond C. Offenheiser
President
Oxfam America

Our work is still not done but we must congratulate one and other for coming together for our brothers and sisters who are in need. If you would like to know more about the progress of Haiti's recovery click here for the official Oxfam America "Haiti Progress Report 2010". Also, here is the site for donations. Remember, Every bit counts!

Jen + Kim Shoes

About a month ago I received an email from Kim from Jen + Kim Shoes. She stated how she was diggin' the blog and would love for me to do a testimonial for their shoes. I checked out their site to see if I at first felt that they fit my personality and my personal style. Once I looked, I saw some super cute wedges, heels, and flats. Of Course, I (being a shoe lover) accepted. I wanted to do a whole week testimonial where I wore this one pair of J+K shoes. I would style them with different outfits according to my daily event. Whether it be to work, a brown bag show, out to dinner with the girls, or a fashion event. I then emailed them with the pairs that I felt fit my style the best and my size. Unfortunately for me none of those shoes were available. However, they did have their new bridal collection (Jen + Kim for Coloriffics) available for the testimonial. I was hesitant at first and was thinking how am I possibly going to wear a bridal shoe for a whole week and incorporate them into my daily wardrobe? And how was I going to get over my pre judgement of hating all "bridal" shoes. I figured it would definitely be a challenge but if my mom taught me anything it was to work it no matter what! I received the shoes and they are def a bridal shoe but they are def. cute at the same time. Fun, feminine, and flirty. What more can you ask for in a bridal shoe. Oh maybe comfort? And yes, there's tons of comfort. So for now I will leave you off on the style that was sent to me. The following posts will have the different looks that I styled with the J+K shoes. Recently it has been a cold snowy mess out here in NYC so I haven't been able to wear them outside yet. Hoping soon.. maybe a photo shoot in the snow? ;)

A Big Thank You to Jen and Kim for thinking of me and keep up the fabulous work! I am dieing for the Bali's!

Check out their site to learn more about Jen and Kim AND design your very own custom pair of Jen + Kim's!

Peace and Love,

Sweet Snow.

Snow, snow, gently drifting to the ground,
For when winter comes, snow will come as well,
Snow is the messenger of winter,
From skiing to toboganning to making snowballs.

Snow, snow gently drifting to the ground,
Falling in the form of unique white snowflakes,
A pure natural blanket,
Sparkling under the sun.

Snow, snow, gently drifting to the ground
Treasure this gift before it melts.

The Year of "Over"

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year. Recently the new year has been kinda weird to say the least. I decided that I must get out of this funk I have been in for a couple of days now. A little while back one of my friends asked me what my new years resolution was going to be. I said to him, I don't really do resolutions bc I know I wont follow them, plain and simple. He then said that what he did last year was, he picked one word to live by for that entire year. So I was thinking hmm that's a pretty good idea. The word I chose was "Over". In my world this means get over the petty things that wont matter in a day, don't stress over something that is not worth stressing over, it's over and done with so now move on, don't let people walk all over you, get over and out of my comfort zone, jump over those obstacles and so on. So far the word of the year is working out pretty well. I just have to keep reminding myself of my word when I am in one of these situations.

A New year states "out with the old and in with the new", right? Well since I get an annual hair cut (bc I am way to lazy) I decided now would be the perfect time. I was a little apprehensive at first but I reminded myself of my new word and I got past the fears.... With that being said.. I am back to bangs! At first I hated it but reminded myself it would be over soon bc my hair grows super quick. Also, to get over it bc it is just hair. I have my health, my family and a job I love. So get over it! So I did and can I just say, I'm kinda loving the "improved" me.

What would be your word of the year?
